This study examined the creation process and organizational
features of Toigyeeonhaeongrok in the version of Lee Su-yeon
published by Dosanseowon, his pupils' views of Toigye in the book,
and the significance and limitations of the book. The Lee Su-yeon
version of the book was completed through Toigyeeorok by Yim
Yeong and Toidoeonhaengtongrok by Gwon Du-gyeong. It was
reorganized to trim the cumbersome parts of the Gwon Du-gyeong
version and correct the wrong parts in the version, which is why
it accepted the Gwon Du-gyeong version in some parts, deleted
unnecessary parts in the version, and revised and supplemented
other parts in the version. It, however, followed the Gwon
Du-gyeong version in that it put an emphasis on the chronicles of
the times along with the basic system and tried to highlight Kim
Seong-il's view of Toigye.
Toigyeeonhaeongrok has a logic system around "study" and
"reading" and, at the same time, a narration system around
"Nonrye" and "Gyoin," which is the result of his pupils' view of
Toigye that he fully mastered both knowledge and practice
simultaneously. The book also has its share of limitations including
the importance of basic disposition, emphasis on the daily life of
a great scholar, and highlighted view of Toigye by Kim Seong-il.
They indicate that there were Toigye's disposition and daily life behind his scholarly aspects. In spite of such significance,
however, the limitations of the book are clear. It adopted Kim
Seong-il's words most, while considerably weakening and
excluding those of Jo Mok and Ryu Seong-ryong.
