본고는 인구증가 및 고령사회로 변모된 근대사회에서의 매장 제도가 지닌 문제점 및 그 해결방안을 제시한 글이다. 전통적인 매 장제도의 가장 큰 문제점은 환경적 측면의 폐해이며, 그 폐해를 줄 이는 방안으로 화장이 장려되기도 했다. 그렇지만 화장 후 골분을 처리하는 현행 봉안방식은 매장이 지니는 다양한 문제점들을 해결 하지 못하고, 오히려 석물에 의한 환경파괴 등 새로운 부작용을 초 래하고 있다. 봉안시설은 매장이 지니는 여러 가지 폐해, 인공적으로 가공된 견고한 석물 등으로 자연회귀가 불가능하다는 문제점, 관리 기간이 끝나거나 관리주체가 부실해질 경우 결국 흉물로 방치되어 환경파괴가 될 가능성이 높다는 문제점 등을 보여준다. 결국 그 대 안으로 2007년 4월 장사법을 개정하여 자연장을 도입하였는데, 자연 장지와 수목장림은 시신을 모신 흔적(예, 봉분이나 일체의 시설)이 없어 환경에 부담을 주지 않고, 자연으로 보낼 수 있어 친환경적이 다. 그러나 개정된 장사법에서 자연장을 묘지로 규정하고 있는 한 매장과 봉안시설의 대안이 되기에는 역부족이다. 이에 본고에서는 친환경적이면서 국토이용의 기본적 이념과도 일치하는 산골형 자연 장지도 함께 운영을 적극 제안했다.
The greatest problem that the traditional burial system has is to function negatively on the environmental protection. Cremation has been partially recommended to deal with the problem, but the current way of cremation (e.g., disposal of powdered bones, construction and/or maintenance of charnel houses) is not free from harmful after-effects on the environment. Thus, the Law of Funeral System was amended to iron out those problems in April 2007, and one of its major characteristics was to introduce natural burial system which leaves no signs of tomb or relevant facilities. As long as natural burial is described as a tomb in the amended law of funeral system, the natural burial might not be a successful substitute for burial or charnel houses. Accordingly, the natural burial system of scattering powdered ashes, instead of burying or keeping potteries which contain the powered ashes, is suggested in this paper.
