본 연구는 학생에 대한 교원의 신념과 지도방식이 학생들의 폭력적 행동 여부에 영향을 미 친다는 가정 하에, 교원의 학생지도관(PCI)이 학교폭력 수준에 미치는 영향을 분석할 목적으 로 수행되었다. 연구 목적을 달성하기 위해 교원의 학생지도관과 학교폭력에 대한 인식 수준, 이러한 인식의 배경변인별 차이, 두 변수 간의 영향 관계를 분석하였다. 주요 연구방법은 설 문조사 방법으로, Willower, Eidell, and Hoy(1967)가 제작한 학생지도관(PCI) 측정도구를 활 용하여 전국 586개 초·중등학교의 교사 5,135명의 온라인 설문조사 응답 자료를 기술통계, t검 증, 분산분석, 위계적 회귀분석방법을 사용하여 분석하였다. 연구결과, 첫째, 교원들의 학생지 도관은 전체적으로 인본주의적 성향보다는 보호감독적 성향에 치우쳤으며, 학교폭력의 심각 성에 대한 인식 수준은 그리 높지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 교원의 학생지도관과 학교폭 력의 심각성에 대한 인식은 성별과 같은 개인 특성뿐만 아니라 학교 소재지, 유형, 규모 등 학교 특성에 따라서도 차이를 보였다. 셋째, 교원이 보호감독적 학생지도관을 견지할수록 학 교폭력의 심각성 수준은 높아지는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구 결과를 토대로 교원에 대한 학생지도 전문적 연수를 위시한 학교폭력 예방과 대책을 위한 정책적 시사점을 제시하였다.
Assuming that teachers’ belief and attitude in students is a major factor influencing on the seriousness of school violence, this study seeks to analyze the effect of teachers’ Pupil Control Ideology(PCI) on the level of school violence. For this purpose, we investigated the level of teachers’ PCI and the perception on school violence, differences depending on the background variables, and the effect of PCI on the level of school violence. A survey method utilizing PCI inventory developed by Willower, Eidell and Hoy(1967) was employed. The responses of 5,135 teachers in 586 elementary and secondary schools were analyzed via descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and hierarchical regression analysis. We found that Korean teachers show custodial tendency towards students rather than humanistic tendency. In addition, teachers’ PCI and the perception on the level of school violence show differences depending upon the teacher and school characteristics. Finally, there is a statistically significant relationship between teachers’ PCI and the level of school violence. Based on the findings, we discussed the importance of teacher factor in preventing school violence, and draw a few policy implications including teacher in-service education.
