The purpose of this study is to look into Imjon Fortress in the period of the Baekje Kingdom and
Baekje Revival Movement led by General Heukchisangji.
Yesan in the period of the Baekje Kingdom was called Ohsa-hyeon where Imjon Fortress was located.
Some conflicting opinions have been expressed on the issue of the location of Imjon Fortress, but on the
whole, the present Yesan district has been presumed as its location through comparisons. In other words,
Imjon Fortress was equipped with locational conditions of commanding a panoramic view of Yesan district,
and this fortress lay at a major position which was linked to the west coast in terms of historical
geography. In addition, with the size of Imjon Fortress up to 2,250 meters long, its historical significance
is judged big as a center of Bakje revival movement after the Baekje Kingdom was destroyed by the allied
forces of Silla and the Tang Dynasty. Further, the leading figure of this revival movement was the general
Heukchisangji who continuously resided in this district by Damnoje(a provincial ruling system of Baekje)
which was a part of the provincial ruling system of the Baekje Kingdom.
