노년기의 신체적 쇠퇴에 따른 심리적 적응에 영향력 있는 변 인인 사회적 지지의 객관적 측면과 주관적 측면의 상대적 영향력을 살펴보았다. 미국 펜실베니아주 소재 노인병원 외래 환자 228명을 대상으로 노년기의 신체적 건강 수준과 우울증간의 관계 및 그에 영향을 미치는 사회적 지지의 영향력을 조사하였다. 신체적 건강 수 준을 평가하는 3개의 하위 척도들과 우울증 검사 도구인 CES-D, 사회적 지지를 평가하는 사회적 접촉 빈도 및 사회 접촉 만족도에 대한 문항들로 이루어진 설문지에 면접 형식으로 답하게 한 결과, 노년기의 신체적 건강의 쇠퇴는 우울증을 증가시키며 또 사회적 접 촉에 대한 만족도가 높을수록 우울증을 감소시키는 것으로 나타났 다. 특히, 객관적 측면의 사회적 지지는 노년기 우울증에 별다른 영 향을 미치지 않았으나, 주관적 사회적 지지인 사회 접촉 만족도가 높을수록 우울증 수준이 낮은 것으로 나타나, 주관적 측면의 사회적 지지가 우울증 예측에 매우 중요한 변인임을 입증하고 있다. 이러한 결과를 객관적․주관적 측면의 사회적 지지가 노년기 우울증에 미 치는 차별적, 상대적 효과의 차원에서 논의하였다.
The present study investigated the effects of two aspects of social support (structural and functional) in the association between physical health and depressed affect among community-residing older adults (n = 228). Data were collected at 2 measurement points of time with 6-month-interval. Results indicated that deterioration of physical health was related with higher level of depressed affect in older adults. Importantly, satisfaction with social contacts (subjective social support) predicted lower levels of depressed affect, while frequency of social participation (objective social support) had no effect on depressed affect at both measurement points. Thus, subjective social support played the crucial role in predicting depressed affect in the association between physical health and psychological well-being among elderly people.
