This study is aimed at developing a three-dimensionally centered art therapy program and
studying its effect on the self-concept and social abilities of children from single-parent
families. Common objects in art therapy such as a house, people, trees and bridges were
selected as symbolic main themes. The three-dimensional art therapy program is designed
to motivate growth and openness in children while creating objects that help children
discover their potential and develop insights about themselves. Children were divided into
an experimental group of 8 children and a control group of 8 children. The
three-dimensionally centered art therapy program was conducted on the experimental group
for 90minutes twice a week, 20 times in total, from July to October 2010. The results of
this research are as follows: First of all, the three-dimensionally centered art therapy
program plays a positive role in improving the self-concept of children from single-parent
families. Children had meaningfully higher self-concepts in all of its sub-sectors; their
physical, family, social, emotional and academic sectors. Secondly, the result shows that the
three-dimensionally centered art therapy program plays a positive role in improving the
social abilities of children from single-parent families. It was found that the
three-dimensionally centered art therapy program has positive effects on all four sociality
abilities: diligence, cooperation, people skills and self-reliability. As a conclusion, this study
proves that the three-dimensionally centered art therapy program has apositive effect on
improving self-concept and social abilities of children from single-parent families.
