The purpose of the study was to develop an action learning-based media education program for
early childhood teachers in order to increase their perspectives on the importance of media education
and promote their teaching competence in media education. After extensive literature review on
media education, early childhood media education, and action learning, pilot studies were
implemented to draw up a draft of the program; the draft was modified on the basis of the results
of expert review to improve its content validity and feasibility. Next, it was tried out and evaluated
in a small learning team, which consisted of six kindergarten teachers and a learning coach (one of
the researchers). The materials used in each session were gathered, and the collected data were
analyzed to examine the problems in the content or management of the program draft; the results
of a summative evaluation were also reflected to finalize the program. The finalized program consists
of seven sessions; the frequency of offline gathering declined while activities in online community
increased. To be specific, the first to third sessions are mainly composed of lectures and discussions
in order for early childhood teachers to understand basic subject knowledge on early childhood media
education; in the forth to seventh sessions, learning takes place while the learning team(s) selects a
real task of early childhood media education in practice and resolves it according to the seven stages
of action learning.
