국문초록

본 연구의 목적은 한국의 세계시민교육 연구동향을 분석하고 이를 통해 기존 연구의 한계와 향후 발전방향에 대한 시사점을 도출하는데 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 먼저 세계시민교육의 개념과 연구 영역을 검토하여 분석틀을 도출하였다. 그리고 연구시기, 연구영역, 연구주제, 교육단계, 연구방법, 학술지 성격에 따라 1995년부터 2016년 2월까지 국내에서 학술지에 게재된 197편의 학술논문과 58편의 석·박사 학위논문, 총 255편을 분석하였다. 분석결과 한국의 세계시민교육에 관한 학술 연구는 세계화에 따른 한국 사회의 변화에 대응하기 위하여 세계시민성의 개념과 교육의 방향을 모색하는 이론적 개념적 논의에서 출발하였다. 그러나 2000년대에 들어 점차 학교교육과정 내에서 세계시민교육을 적용하기 위한 실천 방안에 관한 연구가 활발하게 진행되었으며, 이론적·개념적 연구보다 양적으로 크게 증가하였다. 이는 세계시민교육의 개념과 내용에 관한 이론적 논의가 부족함에도 불구하고 실천을 위한 연구가 확대되고 있음을 시사한다. 그리고 2010년 이후에는 세계시민교육 관련 연구가 민주시민교육, 국제이해교육, 다문화교육, 개발교육 등 유사개념과의 관계 속에서 양적으로 급속하게 확대되었고, 연구주제, 교육단계, 연구방법에서도 다변화가 이루어졌다. 주제별 분석결과 세계시민교육의 교육과정 및 교수법 분석에 관한 연구가 가장 활발하게 진행되었으며, 최근에는 세계시민교육의 프로그램 분석과 효과성에 대한 연구가 증가하고 있다. 연구대상별로는 교육일반에 대한 연구가 가장 큰 비중을 차지했고, 그 다음 중등교육, 초등교육, 고등교육과 평생교육, 마지막으로 유아교육 순으로 나타났다. 연구방법으로는 주로 문헌분석이 사용되었으며, 학술지의 성격에 따른 분석결과로는 교과교육학이 가장 큰 비중을 차지하였다. 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 본 연구에서는 향후 세계시민교육 연구의 방향에 대해 1) 다양한 주체들의 상이한 인식이나 담론 등을 이해하기 위한 이론연구, 2) 거시적인 맥락에서 세계시민교육 실천을 위한 정책 방안 연구, 3) 연구방법과 연구대상의 확대, 4) 체계적인 세계시민교육 전문가 및 연구자 육성을 제안하였다.

영문초록

The purpose of this article is to analyze research trends on global citizenship education, and to suggest the limitations of existing research and implications for future research. In order to do this, this study created an analytic framework by reviewing the concept of global citizenship education and its research themes. We analyzed 255 studies conducted between 1995 and 2016 February (articles: 197, dissertation and thesis: 58), according to the following six criteria: study periods, themes, topics, educational stages, methods, and journal types. The research revealed that before 2000 research focused on conceptual or theoretical themes of global citizenship education in response to Korea’s change in globalization. The total amount of research increased, however, since 2000 the majority of studies focused on implementing global citizenship education. This implies the expansion of implementation research despite the lack of conceptual and theoretical discussion on global citizenship education. Moreover, as the research on global citizenship education has rapidly increased associated with democratic citizenship education, education for international understanding, multicultural education, and development education, its research themes, targets, and methods became diversified. The analysis of themes showed research on curriculum and pedagogy has been the most actively conducted, and recently the research regarding the analysis of global citizenship education programs and its effect is increasing. In terms of educational stages, education in general account for the largest portion. Secondary education, elementary education, higher education and lifelong education, and early childhood education follow, in that order. Document analysis was identified as the most dominant method, and journals regarding curriculum include global citizenship education research the most. Based on the results, this research suggests 1) the need of the theoretical research to understand diverse perception and ideology within global citizenship education, 2) the need for policy research in a macro context, 3) the diversification of research methods and targets, and 4) cultivating experts and researchers on global citizenship education.
