공간능력 활용 세계시민교육은 기존의 시민교육과는 다음의 세 가지 면에서 차이가 있다. 첫째, 지역사회, 국가, 세계 간 연계를 통한 글로벌 관점 형성에 중점을 둔다. 지역사회 수준, 국가 수준, 세계 수준 각각 수준에서 지표상 현상들에 대한 분석과 해결대안 모색을 수행했던 기존의 세계시민교육과는 달리 지역사회, 국가, 세계 수준들을 중첩적으로 처리하면서 상호 연계성의 관점에서 현상을 분석하고 파악하고 대안을 모색한다는 점이다. 둘째, 지리정보매체(예, 지도, 위성사진, 구글어스 등)를 활용하여 글로벌 시각에서 국가와 지역사회 등 하위 지역들의 다양한 지표상 현상들을 살펴보게 한다는 것이다. 셋째, 교육의 과정에서 길러진 글로벌 관점과 글로벌 공간의 내적 다양성 인식을 통해 글로벌 멤버십을 형성하고 자발적인 참여를 이끌어낼 수 있다는 점이다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 연구에서는 초등 고학년에서 활용할 수 있는 공간능력 기반 세계시민교육 학습모듈을 구안, 제시하였다.
Global citizenship Education using spatial ability has the following features. First, The connection of community, nation, and the world is main curriculum of that. In global citizenship education, usually students learn the phenomena at the community level, national level and world level respectively. However, in spatial citizenship education, students can learn the phenomena from the perspective of interconnectedness of the community level, national level and world level. Second, in the teaching method, students can use the Geo-media(map, picture, graphic, satellite images, Google Earth, etc.) and look at the geographic phenomena in a global perspective. Third, students are able to make a global membership with a global perspective and participate in global issues actively. In this study, I present the possibility of fostering global citizenship education in elementary higher classes and the teaching-learning modules for global citizenship education.
