This study is to analyze the physical, emotional, cognitive changes a
dance/movement therapy brings to fire-accident trauma victims suffering from
aftermath trauma, and efforts to delve deeper into the victims’ everyday life
adaptation processes during and after the program. The participants of the
study were 3 college students who had gone through a fire accident. A
dance/movement therapy program comprised of 12 sessions in total, two hours
per session, once a week. The data for analysis were collected from
self-reports during the program and in-depth interviews conducted after the
program. Consensual qualitative research(CQR) method was used to analyze
the data, and the results were as follows. The experiences of dance/movement
therapy fell into 5 main categories: participation motive, conditions before the
program, change of conditions during the program, change of conditions after
the program, and promoting factors of condition-change. These 5 categories
were classified into 14 sub-categories and 52 factors. This study show that
dance/movement therapy effectively helps victims to adjust back to normal life
as the program alleviates PTSD symptoms through body-awareness, enhanced
emotional expressiveness, positive body and self image. The results of this
study suggest that Body-based dance/movement therapy need to be applied as
a psychotherapeutic intervention for victims of trauma. And it is expected to
provide baseline data for future development of body-based dance/movement
therapy program for PTSD.
