This study examined the effects of group art therapy using mandala for older people to find ego
integrity and balanced emotional stability. The participants consisted of eight older adults chosen randomly
from an adult day care center and these subjects were divided into two groups: the control group and the
experimental group. The mandala group art therapy program was conducted 14 times in total, one 90
-minute session per week. This study used the self-esteem scale and the ego integrity scale as pre and
post-test assessments. Data analyses were conducted using the SPSS/WIN 18.0 statistical program and a non
parametric Mann-Whitney U test was executed to investigate whether any statistically significant differences
occurred. Firstly, group art therapy using mandala showed a statistically significant positive effect on the
self-esteem. Secondly, group art therapy using mandala showed a statistically positive influence on whole
ego integrity value, specifically life satisfaction and acceptance of death as low factors of ego integrity. On
the other hand, group art therapy using mandala did not showed any statistically significant positive effect
on acceptance of the past or in the aging process. In conclusion, group art therapy using mandala had a
statisticall positive impact on elderly people’s self-esteem, successful aging, and self integrity by harmonizing
past and present.
