This paper seeks the path of self-healing through the philosophy of G.
Simmel, which the Law of the Individual was the leading pioneer in his
philosophy. The Law of the Individual is a core theme of philosophy’s art of
life that defines the principles and actions of individuals, their personal lives, as
well as the human mind. Therefore, this paper will explore what the philosophy
of the art of life is as it emerged as a new field in the latter half of the 20th
century, investigate what the fundamental goal aimed by the philosophy of the
art of life, standing with in the midst of a fierce debate. The following
questions will be considered throughout the course of this paper. The
philosophy of art of life is closely associated with human values and brings the
question of if one should grant oneself the ‘Law of the Individual’ rather than
the ‘universal law’ based on the Categorical Imperative. In other words, in what
respect of the subjective ‘Law of the Individual’ secures an ethical objectivity
and universality? Moreover, how can this obtained Law of the Individual
overcome misery and lead towards happiness? This paper will then investigate
the grounds and legitimacy of that philosophy through G. Simmel’s individual
law. Lastly, the prospect of the debate regarding the methods of implementing
this within philosophical counseling will be expanded as well as deepened.
