Abstract : The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the horticultural activity program
on depression of the dementia elderly at the care facility.
Method : Research subjects was 15 people in senile dementia to use Gyeonggi material “P” care
facilities. To target more than 65 years, which has received a diagnosis of dementia from the
doctor. They were offered a gardening activity program for a total of 10 session that once a
week (60 minutes) for 10 weeks. Depression Subject in before and after the providing
program was assessed using the South Korea version of the elderly depressed scale truncated
(Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form Korea Version: GDSSF-K).
Result : Horticultural activities program using the results of the study, was found to give a positive
effect on depressive decline in elderly people with dementia. Showed a significant difference
in the reduction of the sense of depression before and after gardening activities program, the
sense of depression according to the age and gender difference was also significant.
Discussion and Conclusion : Taken together the results of this study, gardening program because of the
positive effect in reducing depression dementia elderly, it has been found to be effective in
therapeutic applications for emotional stability. Therefore, it will be able to use to prevent
emotional regression by developing a therapeutic program in consideration of the individual
characteristics.
