Introduction : This study is to discover self-esteem aimed at dementia patients in H geriatric hospital located
in Naju, Jeonnam, and to look into the correlation with satisfaction with a nursing program.
Methods : This study was conducted over two weeks from October 17 to 29, 2011. The study aimed at
30 dementia patients who receive medical service in H geriatric hospital located in Naju,
Jeonnam, and participate in a nursing program while still being able to have basic communications
of over MMSE-K 19 points. As for survey questionnaires concerning self-esteem, the
study used Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) developed by Rosenberg(1965) and translated
by Jeon Byeong-je(1974), and for survey questionnaires concerning satisfaction with a nursing
program, they were composed of five-point scale. Based on the results obtained from collected
survey questionnaires, the study analyzed data using the SPSS 19.0.
Result : As a result of analyzing the degree of self-esteem according to the general characteristics of research
subjects, there was a statistically significant difference in self awareness(P<0.05). Also, as
a result of analyzing the relationship between self-esteem and satisfaction with a nursing program,
the correlation coefficient appeared as being r=0.37 (p=0.05). Therefore, patients who perceived
satisfaction with a nursing program highly also perceived self-esteem highly.
Conclusion : As a result of analyzing the degree of self-esteem according to the general characteristics of dementia
patients who participated in a nursing program, and satisfaction with a nursing program
according to the nursing program, the higher the self awareness, the higher self-esteem.
Furthermore, the higher the satisfaction with a nursing program, the higher self-esteem.
Therefore, based on the research results, it is necessary to develop nursing programs which may
enhance satisfaction with each program and subsequent self-esteem as well by modifying and
complementing appropriate nursing programs for dementia patients.
