This study seeks to analyze the effects of creative teaching and learning methods on
students’ creativity. For this purpose, we investigated levels of the two variables, differences
of perceptions depending on the background variables, and the effects of creative teaching
and learning methods along with student characteristics and school characteristics on
students’ creativity. Utilizing the survey data of 1,636 middle school teachers and students
across Seoul of South Korea extracted from the 「Seoul Education Longitudinal Study(SEL
S)」 administered by the Seoul Education Research & Information Institute, descriptive
statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and hierarchical regression analysis are performed. The
data analysis shows that most teachers apply creative teaching and learning methods to their
teaching activities in a higher level regardless of their personal backgrounds or school
characteristics. However, the level of students creativity differs depending upon personal
backgrounds as well as school characteristics such as monthly household income and ’class
size, although the average level of creativity is considerably high. Finally, there is a
statistically significant relationship between teachers’ application of creative teaching and
learning methods and students’ creativity. Based on the findings, we discussed the
importance of the creative teaching and learning methods of teachers in improving the
students’ creativity, and draw a few policy implications including teacher pre-service and
in-service education.
