The purpose of this study was to get implications on the curriculum revision in South Korea by examining key
concepts, generalized knowledge and skills presented in the Canada Ontario Curriculum, the Australian Curriculum and the
College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards. This study was focused on history in
elementary social studies. The similarities found in the two or three documents were as follows. First, the documents included
4~6 key concepts and presented ‘continuity and change’, ‘cause and effect’ and ‘perspective’ in common. Second, the documents
included generalized knowledge that reflects enduring understanding. Third, the documents included inquiry skills applied to
all subject areas in social studies and presented the skills related to ‘questioning’, ‘gathering sources’, ‘analyzing sources’,
‘drawing conclusions’, and ‘communicating’ in common. Fourth, the documents provided detailed guidelines about key
concepts, generalized knowledge and inquiry skills, and suggested the sequence for each grade band. Finally, the documents
presented how achievement standards were related to key concepts, generalized knowledge and skills. Based on the findings,
implications for improving the elementary social studies curriculum in South Korea were suggested.
