The purpose of this study is to establish a substantive theory to explain ‘Becoming a
mother’ by examining the vivid experiences of ‘Becoming a mother’ of married immigrant
Japanese women and, conducting in-depth analysis on the essence and definition. For such,
the participants of this study were comprised of 5 Japanese women who were married to
Korean men, who had migrated to Korea and who were experienced in child raising. 4
in-depth interviews were conducted on them and qualitative analysis was carried out by
applying the said material to the grounded theory methodology of Strauss and Corbin
(1998). The result of the analysis was identified with 4 core category, 12 sub-categories and
98 concepts. Consequently, ‘becoming a mother’ of married immigrant Japanese women
can be determined as a process into ‘Living augustly as a Korean mother.' This study hopes
to become a useful basic materials for various education and for the development of support
programs that would assist the role as a mother for them.
