This study was written by the question, ‘how to interpret the symbolic meaning of animals better that
represents the unconscious state of client in Figure therapy.’ The unconsciousness of client has formed
within a social system, his or her family. Humans are social animals and it means they are language-using
animals. The existence of man is comprised in the existing language system. Also a client’s memories vary
with the view though which he sees his trauma. That is, the perception of past trauma is not static, but
changeable because it is determined by the present. In this regard, this paper attempts to introduce a
symbol interpretation model as one of the methodologies to interpret animal-symbol related to family
trauma, using Lacan’s symbol understanding of his psychoanalysis. His symbol understanding includes
linguistic unconsciousness, namely the social aspect of unconsciousness and at the same time provides
foundation to the diversity and variation of symbolic meaning through ‘anchoring points.’ This study will
be helpful in using animal symbol of figure therapy in more various ways.
