The purpose of this study is to suggest new approaches to level-based class that has
been conducted in physical education and provide foundational data to provide
students, the subjects of education, with truly meaningful level-based class.
Level-based class that has been given in physical education is focused on students’
physical strength and motor skills, and this researcher names it as “the functional
approach”. However, according to the present curriculum stressing not only the
value of physical activity but the enhancement of creativity, personality, and
competence, the functional approach is limited in many ways. As an alternative for it,
we need a new approach associated with not just functional aspects but students’
refinement or competence as well. This study names the new approach as “the
refinement-based approach” and presents theoretical discussion about it and ways to
practice it. There has not been enough verification on the refinement-based approach
in terms of theoretical or practical aspects; however, “the refinement-based
approach” to level-based class in physical education is expected to provide
educational meanings multilaterally.
