This study aims to investigate a case study of remedial lessons for two 6th grade
underachievers of English at an elementary school. For the analysis, the remedial
literacy program, the teacher's reflective journal, two students' notes were analyzed.
Based on the results of the analysis, the followings are suggested for more effective
remedial English literacy lessons for underachievers. First, an accurate assessment tool
to diagnose reading and writing difficulties of struggling elementary learners of
English should be developed. Second, an effective remedial literacy programs for
Korean struggling English learners should be developed. Also, there should be
in-service teacher training programs for reading coaches of struggling students. In
addition to that, professional learning community should be developed in each school
or school district in order to co-develop remedial lessons for underachievers of
English.
