The purpose of this article is to reveal the mythological character of the ‘Snail Maiden-Overcoming Suffering Type’ in which Yong-Nyeo episodes(용녀전승) are included. This article argues that “Snail Maiden” story’s mythological character can be detected in the ‘marriage between Yong-Nyeo, who is a goddess, and a man’, ‘tyranny of a powerful man’, and the ‘problem-solving through Yong-Nyeo’s transcendental ability.’ In this study I focused on the Snail Maiden’s transcendental ability, a man’s circumstances of poverty and being unmarried, which require the help of goddess, and the hierophany of the Snail Maiden. What is examined ultimately in this paper is the mode of literary imagery about the critical situations, which need miracle, abundance, magic and fantasy.
