Considering the rapid shift toward multicultural society, this study started
with the critical awareness that there should be cultural diversity education for
early childhood. In search for the pragmatic approach to this problem, this study
pinpointed the fact that early childhood education would have influence on a
child’s development throughout lifetime and that diversity would the essential
element of social development. Thus, it focused on investigating the educational
contents in which young children naturally could learn and practice cultural
diversity. Given that multicultural education should be annexed on the life-cycle
perspective, this study purported to develop the program in which the integrated
culture and arts activities could lead young children to explore and embody the
knowledge, attitude, and value of cultural diversity. In doing so, the concepts of
cultural diversity was discussed as well as the importance of cultural diversity
education and Cultural and Arts Education in association with early childhood
development. Then, 4 key values of ‘difference’, ‘acknowledgement’, ‘dialogue’,
and ‘collaboration’ was drawn by analyzing the Nuri Curriculum based on the
literature review. The programs were developed in accordance with 2 life themes
of Nuri Curriculum, which are ‘kindergarten and friends’ and ‘my town’. The
program would provide a chance for young children to develop the sensitivity to
diversity and to respect differences while actually interacting, communicating and
collaborating with friends through artistic expression and activities.
