Across the world, a concept of “Society of Waste Minimization and Sustainable Resource
Recirculation” has been a key of the waste management policy, and also the aspect of
effective usage of waste has been emphasized. To cope with such trends, it is necessary for
Korea to develop continuously technologies related to maximizing recovery rate of thermal
energy in waste incineration facilities, as well as review and complement related systems. In
this context, the study deduced equations of calculating lower calorific value based on actual
operational data gathered from several Municipal waste incineration facilities (53 locations) and
computed the energy gain factors pursuant to the “method of calculating recovery and usage of
waste resource energy’specified in Article 3 Paragraph 2 of the Enforcement Regulation of
the “2015 Wastes Control Act”. As a result, the overall average of the lower calorific value
was computed as 2,318 kcal/kg, while the energy gain factor was calculated as 88.3 % (71.2 %
- 98.1 %) on average. Also, the effective quantity of wastes consumed was analyzed as 38.6 %
(0.0 % - 76.4 %) on average.
