본 논문은 『성학십도』의 ‘철학적 장르’가 ‘기하학’이라는 사실을 밝히 기 위해서 작성되었다. 이를 위해 성학십도의 1도와 6도에서 기하학의 정의와 공리에 해당하는 것을 추려냈다. 퇴계 선생의 『성학십도』가 그 장르에 있어서 기하학이라고 할 때, ‘기하학적으로 증명되는 것이 무엇 인가?’에 대해서 본 논문은 ‘경’(敬)을 다루었다. 오로지 기하학적 질서 에 의해서 퇴계 선생의 敬을 증명했으므로 논문의 제목을 ‘기하학적 질 서에 따라 증명된 퇴계 선생의 敬’이라고 했다. 끝으로 『성학십도』의 철 학적 의의는 성리학의 한 갈래인 도설(圖說)이 아니라, 17세기 스피노자 의 『윤리학』 보다 1세기 앞선 ‘기하학적 체계’에 근거한 철학 작품이라는 것이다. 이러한 사실은 조선의 학문이 서양 근대의 학문과 비교했을 때 뒤처지지 않을 뿐만 아니라 오히려 더 앞선다는 것을 보여준다.
This article is aimed to show that the philosophical genre of Toegye’s Ten Diagrams of Holy Learning(聖學十圖) is to be geometry. On the basis of its philosophical genre this article geometrically proved the core of Toegye’s Kyoung(敬). I discovered 8 definitions and 7 axioms at the first and the sixth diagram. By establishing geometrical definitions and axioms I demonstrated 10 propositions from them, and I proved that the Toegye’s Kyoung(敬) is not the state of the mind but the mind’s power to understand the nature of emotion under the godly perfection. This work is directly related to the understanding of our emotion. According to Toegye’s Kyoung(敬) proved in geometrical order, it leads us to the fact that all emotions are pure and good.
