The purpose of this study is to construct a textbook illustrations as an educational medium
for multicultural education when analyzing the contents of illustrations in the textbooks of
multicultural education in the illustration textbooks of 2009 revised curriculum elementary
school textbooks and constructing integrated textbook illustrations To provide basic data on For
this purpose, the illustrations in 16th integrated textbooks of 1st and 2nd grade of 2009 revised
curriculum were analyzed by the analysis criterion of multicultural education contents. As a
result of the analysis, the number of illustrations in 16 textbooks was 3,229, and the number of
illustrations related to multicultural education was 361, which accounted for 11.2% of the total.
The analysis related to the multicultural education was divided into five categories: cultural
background, identity, recognition of diversity, cooperation, and overcoming bias. As a result of
the analysis, the cultural backgrounds (214 cases) were the most related to the illustrations
related to multicultural education, followed by identity (143 cases), recognition of diversity (81
cases), cooperation (25 cases) and overcoming bias (1 case). In the cultural background, there
were 106 Korean, 83 Asian, and 25 English. In the identity, 142 national identities were formed
and one positive recognition artwork was presented. In order to recognize diversity, 72 white,
12 yellow, 17, and other races were shown in the illustrations. In cooperation, there were 18
cooperation with other people, 8 cooperation with various communities, 1 sex role in
overcoming bias, and 1 illustration showing physical characteristics. The results of this research
are based on the cultural pride and national identity of Korea in diverse and multicultural
societies with diverse cultural backgrounds, and they accept diverse cultures of other countries
and understand different cultures, And the intention to cultivate a respectful attitude was
reflected.
