The purpose of this study was to investigate in-service early childhood teachers’ beliefs about
writing for 5 years and teaching practices. The subjects were a total of 181 in-service teachers. A
questionnaire was developed from previous research and through meetings with experts in this area.
The questionnaire includes a priority for writing education, contents for writing education, effective
methods for writing education, writing activities for transition to primary school. As a result of this
study, in terms of early childhood teachers’ beliefs about writing for 5 years, they responded that
they should consider young children when they teach and that the most effective way to teach
writing is when young children want to do themselves. In terms of early childhood teachers’ practices
for teaching writing, they responded that they determine writing level on request of parents, and
that they teach writing beyond national curriculum level.
