The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of urban renewal program on
inequality of educational space. This article has two research question: First, what is the
characteristic of new urban space appearing in the process of urban renewal program?
Second, what is the characteristic of new educational space appearing in this process?
'Space' is not a priori physical space. It is a social space produced socially. So, space is
embedded in Capitalism order. Particularly, the divided residental areas of urban space
involve inequality in Capitalism order. Urban renewal program which produces new urban
space is the field of representing each groups’ struggles for dominating Space, so the
process of social order is reconstructed spatially emerged clearly. To consider this
process, Eunpyeong Newtown was investigated. First, Eunpyeong Newtown is a neo-liberal
urban space. Second, Eunpyeong Newtown is urban space represented social order of
involvement and exclusion. Third, Eunpyeong Newtown is commercialized urban space.
Along with this, the educational space of Eunpyeong Newtown has also same
characteristics with Eunpyeong Newtown urban space. These reconstructions of
educational space cause inequality of educational opportunity. In conclusion, urban renewal
program affect on spatial reconstruction of educational inequality.
