This study is to find out what the barriers to participating in lifelong education perceived by
the parents of the children with developmental disabilities, to examine what kind of differences
can be perceived by the social demographic characteristics of the parents and their children,
and to investigate the effect of the barriers to participating in lifelong education for parents of
the persons with developmental disabilities on the intention of participating in lifelong education
in the future. For this study, the results of the survey targeting 198 parents who have never
experienced the lifelong education programs among the parents of the children with
developmental disabilities have been analyzed and the principal results of the study are as
follows. Firstly, the institutional barriers and the informational ones among the barriers to
participating in lifelong education are found to be perceived highest. Secondly, the results of
examining the difference among the barriers to participating in lifelong education depending on
the social demographic characteristics of the parents and their children show that the situational
barriers vary according to the gender of parent, the total income of the family, the type of the
child's disability, and the expectancy of occupation and the institutional barriers to the
educational background of parent and the expectancy of occupation of the child, and the
dispositional ones to the type of the child's disability. Thirdly, the results of analyzing the
effect of the barriers to participating in lifelong education for parents of the persons with
developmental disabilities on the intention of participating in lifelong education in the future
show that the higher the dispositional barriers are, the lower intention of participating in
lifelong education in the future are. Based on the above-mentioned results of the study, some
discussions have been made on how to enhance the rate of participating in the lifelong
education for parents of the persons with developmental disabilities and to improve their quality
of life.
