This study aims to explore how to use Chosun mathematics in the current mathematics education for improving
students’ understanding of cultural diversity and traditional mathematical thinking. For this purpose, we analyzed 13 mathematics
textbooks currently used in middle schools, and found that only a small number of problems dealt with realistic
contexts and that few problems address history of mathematics. Since Chosun mathematics was developed to meet individual
and social needs, it may facilitate our understanding of mathematical values and usefulness as well as Chosun mathematicians’
approaches in mathematics. Using problems addressing similarity in「Muksajipsanbeop」,「Guiljip」and「Yisushinpyon」,
we developed some possible ways of using Chosun mathematics in mathematics education. Lastly, we discussed important
implications on mathematics education using history of mathematics.
