This paper aims to explore Yizhuan(易傳)’s theory of knowledge by
analyzing various types and characteristics of knowledge, the sources of
knowledge, and a matter of memories, which are the fundamental problems of
human knowledge, shown in the Yizhuan. To do this, this paper analyzes the
types and characteristics of Yizhuan’s knowledge as “knowing (zhi, 知)”.
Knowledge of the Yizhuanshows a feature as comprehensive knowledge
covering human behavior and life as well as conceptual and classification
knowledge. Next, this paper explores intuitive and analytical cognition as the
ways to obtain knowledge in the Yizhuanthrough “tong”(通) and “lei”(類),
focusing on “by spreading the power of spiritual clarity, classify the dispositions
of the myriad things (Tong Zhenming Zhi Dao Yi Lei Wanwu Zhi Qing”(通神
明之德, 以類萬物之情). Moreover, the transformation and it’s ground from
intuitive cognition to analytical cognition will be discussed based on the eight
diagrams (bagua, 八卦) and etc.
