The purpose of this study is to analyze the research trends of instructional leadership in
elementary and secondary school in South Korea for the past 20 years(1996-2016). The
research trends of instructional leadership were divided into study subjects, research
methods and types, research subjects. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, the
subject of instructional leadership is relatively limited. This tendency appears to be an
important study subject because the school principals' instructional leadership has a great
influence on the achievement of school education and conditions. Second, quantitative
research methods are dominant in teaching methodology in South Korea while there were
many qualitative research methods in the United States. Third, the effects of instructional
leadership on various influencing factors were investigated. Based on the results of this
analysis, the following implications were derived. First, the research on teaching leadership
is should not limited to the principal and the teachers but needs to be extended to a wider
range. Second, it is necessary to think about the research on the development of tools that
can measure appropriately teaching instructional ability. Third, it is crucial to use various
methods in terms of study methods of instructional leadership in accordance with research
topic and purpose. Based on this, proposals for follow-up studies were suggested.
