The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence metabolic syndrome and its components, to
explore the prevalence of health risk behaviors associated with metabolic syndrome, and compare the
prevalence of metabolic syndrome by demographic characteristics. Data from Korean National Health and
Nutrition Examination Survey from 2008 to 2012 were used for this study. The subjects of this study were
355 adults over 20 years old who livesd in Jeju, South Korea.
The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 29.65% among adults in Jeju. The prevalences of metablic

syndrome components were as follows; The prevalence of central obesity among subjects was 29.60%,
elevated triglyceride 31.96%, decreased high density lipoprotein cholesterol 46.84%, elevated blood pressure
41.44%, elevated fasting glucose 24.61%. The results showed that smokers was 26.86%, and high-risk
alcohol drinkers was 16.45%. Among the subjects, 25.15% reported they walk at least 30 min a day,
41.14% were obese, and sodium intake per day was 4914.39mg.
This study presented that metabolic syndrome were prevalent and the related health risk behaviors and
health problem were common among adults in Jeju. Therefore, the public health strategies and clinical
efforts were needed to prevent and manage this metabolic syndrome and the related health issues.
