The purpose of the study is to elicit educational implications for the age of lifelong learning in the 21st
century for developing university curriculum by exploring Southern New Hampshire university in the U.S.,
and Sydney university in Australia. For the purpose, we explored the definitions, principles of competency
based education and the cases of Southern New Hampshire university as well as Sydney university. Based
on the literature reviews, it can be concluded that implications of lifelong learning for developing
curriculums in Korean universities were meaningful. First, integrative education with lifelong learning
attitude will be needed to cope with upcoming society characterized by increasingly complicate and
unpredictable societies in terms of interdisciplinary perspectives. Second, fostering students with a capacity
for lifelong learning beyond traditional education to deal with various aspects of life will be needed. Third,
ultimately, core competencies that are based on graduates attributes universally agreed upon by university
members have to be carefully selected to develop competency based education.
