봉황은 고대로부터 기린·용·거북 등과 함께 4령(靈)으로 인식되어온 상상의 새로 알려져 있으며, 수컷은 봉(鳳), 암컷은 황(凰)으로 이루어진 암수 한 쌍을 가리킨다. 그리고 역사적으로 중국의 한족 (漢族)은 용(龍)을 천자의 상징으로 여겼고, 한민족(韓民族)은 봉황을 홍익정치의 상징으로 활용해왔으 며, 지금도 대한민국 대통령 문장으로 사용하고 있다. 한민족의 새 토템은 하늘의 자손이라는 천손인 식(天孫認識)을 바탕으로 한다. 삼족오는 한민족 고유 사상인 천지인(天地人)을 나타내는 상징체계로 일종의 문화코드이고 주작은 천문도에서 남방(南方)을 주재하는 방위체계인 천문코드이다. 이러한 삼 족오나 주작은 성별(性別)을 뛰어넘어 존재하는 상상적이고 이상주의적 요소가 있는데 반해 봉황은 매우 현실적이다. 그런데 여러 문헌과 유물 속에서 봉황은 한국의 토종닭과 매우 유사함을 알 수 있 을 뿐만 아니라, 그 기원은 홍산문화에서 시작되었다. 이런 점에서 글쓴이는 최근 복원에 성공한 긴 꼬리닭이 봉황의 모티프가 되었을 것으로 본다.
