This research has studied the thought for ‘the sense of wonder’ and its implication which would
give early childhood education for sustainable development, based on overall thoughts of Rachel
Carson. The research materials are Carson's major writings, her biographies, pictures, and video
records etc. As research results, Carson’s ‘sense of wonder’ means the core emotion leading to the
love of nature and care, and the messages which the thought for ‘the sense of wonder’ includes are
an emphasis on the intimacy with nature, an ecocentrism, and the orientation of ‘goals for being’.
The implication, which Carson’s thought for ‘the sense of wonder’ would give the early childhood
education for sustainable development, is as follows; Young children could take the lead in protecting
healthy ecosystem and seeking after a harmony with nature, first by being provided many
opportunities that their sensitivity of the natural environment could be enhanced, second by being
forced to sustain the ecocentric attitude which emphasizes a harmony between living creature and
non-living things, and third by being guided to experience the joy and happiness of the life that
pursues not ‘the goals for having’ but ‘the goals for being’. Finally, this research has also suggested
to support teachers of early childhood education so that they could recognize the importance of their
roles.
