Drawing on second wave data of the 2nd panel from the Community Child Center Survey, we
examined the structural relationships between the factors influencing school adjustment among Korean
fifth graders using community child center. Our structural equation modeling(SEM) results exhibited that
child deprivation index, parent-child relationship, community child center teacher-child relationship, and
the level of satisfaction with the center have significant effects on school adjustment. Parental
socioeconomic status(SES) was found not to exert a direct influence on child's school adjustment.
Parental socioeconomic status was a key determinant of the child deprivation index, however, which has
the strongest influence on school adjustment. The child deprivation index had a strong impact on
parent-child relationship but had little to do with the variables associated with community child center.
On the other hand, teacher-child relationship at the center yielded a strong direct effect on school
adjustment, and also had a significant indirect effect on school adjustment through satisfaction with the
center. Based on the results, we discussed briefly the ways in which community child center can
contribute to the upward mobility of low-income children.
