The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of cultural disposition on the
attitudes toward older people and to examine the moderating effect of knowledge levels
about the elderly in the process that cultural dispositions affect on the attitudes toward
the elderly. Using data from 412 participants(aged 20-39) in Busan and Gimhae,
Hierarchical Regression model was tested. Based on the results of this analysis, we
proposed alternatives of age integration between young and old generations.
The main results of this study is as follows, First, It was found that the attitudes
toward the elderly were medium level, the knowledge about the elderly was low, and
the attitudes toward the elderly was positive as the age was low. Second, Vertical
collectivism positively influenced attitudes towards the elderly in the four cultural
dispositions. Third, Horizontal individualism has no major effect on attitudes towards the
elderly, but Horizontal individualism positively influenced attitudes toward older people
when interacting with knowledge about the elderly.
Based on the results of this analysis, this study suggests alternatives that can have a
positive attitude toward the elderly according to younger generation's cultural dispositions.
In the horizontal individualism, we have proposed education program that enhance the
knowledge about the elderly. In the horizontal collectivism, Programs were suggested that
expand opportunities for interaction between young and older generations
