Objectives: This study explored the adaptation experiences of breast cancer survivors and their partners. Methods: Nine breast cancer survivors—married women aged 40 years or older, treated with mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy—were enrolled in the study. The data, collected from two to three in-depth interviews, were analyzed with methods proposed by Colaizzi. Results: The following major themes emerged: a) difficulty in work life, housework and parenting b) devoted my life to family rather than me c) deepening the couple relationship d) cancer amplifying marital conflict. Subthemes included the following: a) pain that causes limitations as a human being b) struggle for survival c) reign of mind d) restoration of marital relationship after healing and e) growth after trials. The overarching themes identified were a) life overcomes the pain of life and b) fear of death. Conclusions: The authors offered specific suggestions for the treatment of female breast cancer survivors.
