Visible light communications (VLC) using the intensity modulation of Light-emitting diodes(LEDs)
provides a new communication medium to overcome the shortage of radio spectrum, and allows reuse of
LED lighting infrastructures. This paper proposes an TSSI(Transmitted Signal Strength Indication) scheme to
estimate the travel distance between a transmitter and a receiver in visible light communication using LED.
The traditional method, such as TOA(Time of Arrival) or RSSI(Received Signal Strength Indicator), have
been seen limited use in the VLC system. Proposed method started to solve this problem. This scheme use
transmitted signal strength when the result value of shift-correlation be satisfied to be threshold by PN code
such as preamble signal for synchronization. In this paper, we confirmed performance of proposed TSSI
scheme which it satisfied maximum measurement error range of 7% compare with travel distance. This
result solves problems of exiting schemes for estimation of travel distance in the VLC system and we are
confident that proposed scheme would bring benefit to various application service.
