This study is casual research conducted to identify the factors that influence of self-efficacy and
depressive symptom on interpersonal communication competence of nursing students. The major statistical
analysis results of 370 nursing students were as follows. (1) interpersonal communication competence had a
negative correlation with depressive symptom (r=-.28, p<.001) and self-efficacy (r=.58, p<.001) and
depressive symptom had a negative correlation with self-efficacy(r=-.24, p<.001). (2) In hierarchical
regression step 1 factors that had significant impact on interpersonal communication competence of nursing
students were grade (p=.011), interpersonal relationship (p<.001), personality (p=.012) with an explanatory
power of 20.2%. In hierarchical regression step 2 factors that had significant impact on interpersonal
communication competence of nursing students were grade (p=.040), perceived socioeconomic status
(p=.026), interpersonal relationship (p=.001), depressive symptom (p<.001) and self-efficacy (p=.036) and
explanatory power was increased to 40.2%. Through this study, self-efficacy and depressive symptom were
identified as having the significant effect on interpersonal communication competence. As a follow-up, in
order to improve interpersonal communication competence, a study to develop programs that would promote
self-efficacy and depressive symptom are suggested.
