This study was designed to reveal the actual conditions of traffic safety education in schools for children with mental retardation , including the quality of the education and how it is conducted. Valid responses to our survey were obtained from 84 schools. The results of our study are summarized below. (1) 1t is not educationally effective to place simulated traffic signals and pedestrian crosswalks in schools to represent an actual intersection because they have difficulty in associating the simulated site with an actual one. (2) Simplifying the content of the curricula to an infantile level does not enable understanding by them. (3) The use of dummies in reenacting traffic accidents could frighten the children so that they are unwilling to go out of their homes.
