This study aims to clarify how parents who have infants think about giving their children picture books regarding people with handicap and whether they have given their children such picture books before or not. This survey provided the following results; * The number of the parents who have ever read picture books to their children regarding handicap was one out of four. The main reason why they read the books to their children was that “ They happened to get such books" . There were , however, not a few parents who wanted their children to know that there are a lot of handicapped people in the world. * When parents were asked if they wanted to read picture books to their children dealing with this subject, there were few parents who answered “ I don’t want to read them to my children." or “ It is unnecessary to do." Furthermore, there were not many who strongly hoped to read such books to their children. * A lot of parents answered “ I have no idea which picture book to give." or “ I have no confidence in providing a good answer to the children’s questions about this topic," as a result of their lack of understanding about. However, there were not a few parents who answered “ I won’t feel any special difficulties about reading such books to my children ’ But by their inappropriate guidance, there is a risk that infants will have some negative images about the subject or have a fixed idea about the handicapped.
