This study explores the current status of art-related service activities in eight arts high schools in Seoul and
Gyeonggi Province in terms of service-learning. Based upon the survey conducted at the schools, we find
that the majority of art students in the arts high schools have participated in community services focusing
on mural-making activities to get credits for their college admissions. To improve the current service activities,
the following suggestions are provided: (1) The art-related service activities should be connected with
art education in creative ways; (2) Systematic pre & post education and assessment should be developed
for student reflections; (3) Strategies and support for continuous and self-directed art-based service-learning
activities should be provided to overcome the current instrumental perceptions of the activities.
