Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of middle-aged wives and their spouse’s anger management problems. Methods: The researchers conducted intensive interviews with seven middle-aged wives. The collected data were analyzed using Giorgi’s phenomenological research method. Results: Three components were derived from the study: the spouse's anger management problems as perceived by the wives, experiences regarding the spouse's anger, and coping with the spouse's anger. The wives learned from their experiences from their family of origin, learned about the desperation of their spouse’s anger, and, through experiencing various emotions, worked to actively to overcome their spouse's anger. Improving their self-esteem as a means of changing themselves first, the wives discovered that emotional segregation restored their lives, allowing them to grow. Conclusions: The results of this study were discussed within the framework of family therapy theories. The authors suggested implications for future marital and family counseling clinical practice.
