Purpose: The study was to examine the effect of encouragement group counseling based on Adler’s individual
psychology on the reduction of depression and enhancement of hope. Method: The subjects of the study were
14 students who had depression tendency (D>60T) through the MMPI-A among 40 students of K high school
in the J region. Based on the single group pre - post design, the eight session of Adlerian encouragement
group counseling program was conducted in a group marathon format. Data were collected using
depression(CES-D) and hope scales(Hope Scale) to examine pre-post changes, and data were analyzed through
the paired t-test. Results: After the program, depression level of high school students with high subjective
depression was decreased and hope level was improved (p<.05). Among the subscales of depression scale, only
depression emotion showed statistically significant difference. Conclusion: This study suggests that encouraging
group counseling based on Adler 's Individual psychology is positive counseling intervention which can reduce
depressive emotions by promoting hope through encouragement rather than counseling intervention which
reduces depressive emotion itself to subjective depressed adolescents.
