노자의 도덕경에 대해서는 수많은 해석이 있어왔고 앞으로도 있을 것이다. 이번 논문에서는 현대서양철학자인 화이트헤드의 관점에서 도덕경을 해석해보고자 한다. 화이트헤드 철학은 유기체철학이지만 과정철학으로 불리기도 한다. 유기체철학이라고 불리는 이유는 별들을 포함한 우주의 모든 현실적 존재자들은 유기적으로 연결되어 있으며, 그들은 제각각 주체적 목적을 지닌 채 자기식의 삶과 죽음을 맞이하고 있다는 관점 때문이다. 그리고 과정철학이라고 불리는 이유는 비현실적 존재자(영원한 대상, eternal object)가 지닌 부동(不動)의 고정된 것보다 현실적 존재자(actual entity)가 겪는 유동(流動)의 과정(process)을 실재(reality)로 보는 관점 때문이다. 이러한 화이트헤드의 관점을 갖고 도덕경 1장을 보면, 부동의 항상을 드러내는 현상이 유명(有名)으로, 유동의 영속을 가리키는 실재가 무명(無名)이다. 이들이 다르면서도 동일한 도에서 나왔다는 현(玄)을 알아야 도덕경의 문을 제대로 두드릴 수 있다는 점이 강조된다.
There have been a lot of interpretations about Laotse. It will be so in the future. This paper also attempted another interpretation. It is based on the philosophy of Whitehead, a modern Western philosopher. His philosophy is also called an organic philosophy or a process philosophy. The former is because all actual entities of universe have a purpose, that is to say, a subjective aim as a subject and at the same time they are connected to each other organically. The latter is due to regard as reality the process of flow experienced by actual entities rather than the fixed immovability of the non-actual entities. Having a view of this Whitehead, if we look at chapter one of Laotse, we can see that revealing the always of Immobility is the named, where as the reality pointing out the persistence of flow is unnamed. We have to understand that these two are different but came from the same Tao. This is Hsuän. When we know this Hsuän. we can properly open the door of Latose.
