A collection of the Korea National Maritime Museum 《Paintings of the Naval
Training》is an eight-fold folding paintings described the naval training in the late
Joseon period. Large-scale naval trainings took place in Tongyeong where was general
headquarter of naval forces located in. Two times of training have been held in spring
and fall with participation from the naval forces of the Gyeongsang, Jeolla, and
Chungcheong Provinces. We called ‘Tongyeong-Habjo’ which means that large-scale
joint training under the commanding general of naval forces in Tongyeong.
This study focuses on 《Paintings of the Naval Training》 collected in Korea
National Maritime Museum, and see its disposition and feature of naval forces with
historical backgrounds of naval training in the late Joseon. and also study on expression
characteristics in this paintings.
In this study, 《Paintings of the Naval Training》 in the KNMM collection can be
said to be a paintings for preparing regularly held large-scale training in spring. It
concluded that this painting was military data and training manual of each region’s
naval forces.
