The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of online chat counseling. We selected 40 adolescent
clients with no experience of both cyber and face-to-face counseling. Subjects were divided into an experimental
group and a control group, and then participated in a pre-test and post-test of questionnaires including Chat
Counseling Outcome Scale and Self-Esteem Scale. ANCOVA was used to analyze the data. The major findings of
the study were as follows. First, the level of ‘resolving negative emotions’, ‘acquiring problem-related information’,
and ‘willingness to change behavior’ factors showed statistically significant differences between the groups. Second,
the level of ‘understanding of self and other' had no statistically significant difference between the groups. Third,
the level of ‘self-esteem scale' was statistically significant indicating the group difference. Based on the findings of
this study, we also discussed for the limitations of the study and the implications for the future researches.
