This study aims to examine in depth the meanings of fan activities and ego-identity development perceived by
adult women. For this study, an individual interview was conducted with 10 female participants, who had
experienced at least three years of fan activity. The data was analyzed with Consensual Qualitative Research(CQR)
method. Six major domains with 13 sub-categories were developed from the data. Most participants perceived
their ego-identity development as ‘stable and consistent identity development’, ‘interpersonal role expectation’,
‘self-acceptance’, ‘self-assertion’, ‘interpersonal relationship’. However, the interviewees also indicated negative
experiences of ‘self-existence awareness’. This study provides an opportunity of demonstrating more specific cases
on the phenomenon of fan activities in relation to ego-identity development. Moreover, not only could this look
into the meanings and influence of fan activities during adolescence, but also their lasting effects into the
adulthood.
