This study verified the structural relations among covert narcissism, internalized shame, fear of intimacy, and
loneliness. This study sampled 532 male and female adults with an age of 20 and older. Three main results
were reported by this study. First, the path at which covert narcissism acts as a mediator for fear of intimacy
and ultimately led to loneliness. Second, the path at which covert narcissism affects loneliness through
internalized shame and fear of intimacy, which leads to a double mediator effect. Lastly, through phantom
variables, that the indirect effects of covert narcissism through internalized shame on loneliness and the direct
effects of covert narcissism on loneliness were statistically insignificant. Based on the results, the effects of covert
narcissism on negative affect and interpersonal relationship were discussed along with the implications for
counseling interventions.
